Orthodox Music Conference

Our Faculty Member, Dr Andrew Mellas, recently presented a paper at the 10th International Society of Orthodox Church Music (ISOCM) Conference in Finland. In keeping with the theme of the 10th ISOCM Conference, ‘Church Music, Food and Nourishment’, Dr Mellas explored the portrayal of heavenly nourishment in the hymns of St Romanos the Melodist. In his hymn on the five loaves and the feeding of the five thousand, Romanos evokes a fascinating image of the loaves ‘giving birth’ and multiplying, interpreting the miracle as a eucharistic event and an invitation to the heavenly banquet of eternity.
