Cambridge University Press has just published the paperback edition of Liturgy and the Emotions in Byzantium by Dr Andrew Mellas. Exploring the liturgical experience of emotions in Byzantium, this book reimagines the performance of hymns by St Romanos the Melodist, St Andrew of Crete and St Kassia in Constantinople. It reveals how compunction was a liturgical emotion, intertwined with paradisal nostalgia, a desire for repentance and a wellspring of tears. The book is available here:
