On Saturday 5th October, St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, with the blessing of our President and Dean His Eminence Archbishop Makarios will hold a service of conferral of an honorary doctorate award upon His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who whill be visiting Australia on the occasion of the centenary anniversary since the establishment of the Greek Orthodox Church in the Antipodes.
The Administrative Council of St Andrew’s Theological College passed this unanimous motion to pay tribute to the thirty-three-year Patriarchal tenure of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the consummate contribution that His All-Holiness has made to Orthodox theology, both in the discipline of Canon Law but also more broadly through his many publications, statements and encyclicals.
Furthermore, his extraordinary leadership, which has shown forth in many and variegated ways the ecumenical breadth and vision of Orthodoxy on a global scale, coupled with his unrivalled ecological commitment, his concern for the dignity of the human person, his tireless work for peace and reconciliation, all of which have forged new ground within these areas, unequivocally warrant this decision by our Theological College.
The conferral ceremony will take place on Saturday 5th October 2024, 6:00pm, at the University of Sydney Seymore Centre, which is located on the corner of City Road and Cleveland Street Chippendale.
Following this event, the Greek Orthodox Christian Society will stage a celebratory performance, through a vibrant tapestry of songs and dances, which will trace the 100-year presence of our Holy Archdiocese in Australia in honour of the Ecumenical Patriarch.
