The Queensland State Youth Conference took place on Saturday, 7 December 2024, at the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Mt Gravatt, Brisbane. The event brought together over 250 participants, highlighting the enthusiasm and commitment of the youth within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
St Andrew’s Theological College played a key role in the conference proceedings. His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, President and Dean of St Andrew’s, delivered the keynote address titled “We are Ready for the Future.” In his speech, His Eminence emphasised the necessity of orienting one’s life toward Christ and His Church while underscoring the importance of sharing the light, hope, and joy of Christ with others.
The conference also featured insightful presentations from two notable graduates of St Andrew’s: His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide and Reverend Father Chris Dimolianis. Both speakers highlighted the pivotal role of youth in the life of the Church, particularly as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia celebrates its 100th anniversary since its establishment in 1924. Their addresses emphasized the vital need to preserve the treasures of Greek Orthodox identity for future generations.
There was a special session dedicated to the work of St Andrew’s Theological College which provided an opportunity for Dr Philip Kariatlis, Sub-Dean of the College, to present the various programs of study offered and to discuss the unique nature of theology. Dr Kariatlis also elaborated on how the study of theology is relevant to daily Christian living, offering practical insights to the attendees.
A highlight of the conference was the announcement by Mr George Mastrokostas, Honorary Consul of Greece in Brisbane, of the establishment of an annual scholarship. This initiative will support young individuals from Queensland who wish to pursue studies at St Andrew’s Theological College in Sydney, fostering future theological education and leadership within the community.
