Today, during the Hierarchical Liturgy for the Feast of Saint Makarios the Great of Egypt, College student Fr Timotheos (Dimitrios) Mavromatis was ordained to the holy diaconate by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios in the Greek Orthodox Church of St Spyridon (Kingsford, NSW). His Eminence, who was celebrating his name day, presided over the Divine Liturgy, and concelebrated with Their Graces Bishop Kyriakos of Sozopolis, Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia and Bishop Evmenios of Kerasounta, together with dozens of clergymen of the Archdiocese. Also in attendance was His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Sebasteia. The Liturgy also included the ordination of Dn Stephanos Tinikasvili to the holy priesthood, after six years of faithful diaconal service to His Eminence, and his subsequent elevation to the rank of ‘Archimandrite’ at the conclusion of the Liturgy.
Deacon Timotheos was born and raised in Brisbane before moving to Sydney for theological studies in 2020. Fr Timotheos currently serves as a deacon to His Eminence whilst also assisting in the Personal Office of the Archbishop. He was tonsured a monk by His Eminence on 4 December 2021 at the Holy Monastery of St George (Yellow Rock, NSW) and given the name ‘Timotheos’ in honour of the late Metropolitan Timotheos (Evangelinidis) of Australia and New Zealand (1880-1949), who was the second Greek Orthodox Primate for the Antipodes from 1931 to 1947; and in honour of the late Archbishop Timotheos III (Papoutsakis) of Crete, who was the ruling hierarch of the Archdiocese of Crete under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from 1978 to 2006.
