On Tuesday, 27 January 2026, Associate Professor Philip Kariatlis, Sub-Dean of St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, delivered a presentation to teachers from the Greek Orthodox Day Schools of New South Wales at a Professional Development Day held at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady, Redfern.
In his address, Teaching as Encounter: An Orthodox Vision of Knowledge, Personhood, and Formation, Associate Professor Kariatlis reflected on teaching as a sacred vocation rooted in love, relationship, and the formation of the whole person. Drawing on Scripture and the Patristic tradition, he emphasised that education is not merely the transfer of information, but an encounter that shapes character, awakens wonder, and accompanies students in their journey of becoming, created in the image and likeness of God.
Highlighting the student as a person rather than a product, he described the classroom as a space of encounter where every subject contributes to the formation of the human person. The presentation concluded by affirming the teacher’s role as a witness to meaning and hope, entrusted with nurturing the dignity and potential of each student.
The day also included presentations by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Adelaide and the Reverend Fr Pandeleimon Toumbelekis, and concluded with fellowship over morning tea, providing educators with the opportunity to reconnect, share experiences, and renew their commitment to Orthodox education. The day affirmed the vital role of Orthodox Day Schools in the life of the Church and the ongoing formation of young people in faith, knowledge, and personhood.
