Curriculum Objectives

This module aims at giving the student the foundational understanding for identifying the 3 Byzantine music genres and chanting the 8 modes of Byzantine Music.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the 3 genres, 3 styles, and 8 modes in Byzantine music notation.
  2. Understand the elements that vary between the modes.
  3. Chant simple hymn in each of the 8 modes.

Content

  1. Selected hymns from Vespers for every mode.
  2. Selected hymns from Mattins for every mode.
  3. Selected hymns from the Divine Liturgy

Assessment Profile

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the various elements that make up the 8 modes, e.g. quizz.
  2. Demonstrate how modes are found and applied in practice, e.g. in class participation, and practical exam.
