Curriculum Objectives

This module aims at giving the student the foundational understanding of the notation for reading Byzantine Music.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the various elements of the notation (i.e. Scale, Qualitative & Quantitative Characters, Combination and Compound Characters, et al.).
  2. Understand the concept of the basic rhythm types used in Byzantine music.
  3. Perform the two ways for reading the notation (paralagi & melos)

  5. Compound Characters
  6. Combination Characters
  7. Sharps & Flats
  8. Exercises on various base notes

Assessment Profile

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the musical characters, e.g. quizzes.
  2. Perform the two styles reading the notation (paralagi & melos), e.g. in class participation, and oral exam.
