2014 Sydney College of Divinity Graduation Ceremony

St Andrew’s took part in the thirtieth graduation ceremony of the Sydney College of Divinity (SCD) on 10 May. On a beautiful Sydney morning, around 600 people attended the Great Hall of the University of Sydney to celebrate the academic achievements of 172 graduates from the seven member institutions of the SCD and its affiliates. The various degrees and awards were presented by the President of the SCD Council, Mr Peter King.

F.O.C.U.S. and S.U.O.F. Forum

On the 5th of May, Dr Philip Kariatlis (Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology) spoke about the early Church at the public forum which was co-hosted by the Fellowship of Orthodox Christian University Students and the Sydney University Orthodox Fellowship at the University of New South Wales, and was based on the following topic: ‘The Original Church; Where Did the Church of the Apostles Go?’

Christianity and the Arts

Christianity and the Arts will be returning to the Greek Orthodox Parish of the Resurrection of Christ, Kogarah, from the 12th May at 7:30 pm in the hall next to the Church. The first presentation, by the Very Revd Dr Doru Costache, is entitled ‘Christ is Reason!

Inaugural Annual SCD Lecture

The inaugural Annual SCD Lecture took place at the SCD headquarters on Wednesday, the 30th of April, upon the initiative of its Director of Research, Professor James Harrison.

Research Seminar Presentation

On Tuesday 12 April, Mr Anthony Papantoniou, Associate Lecturer in Patristic Studies, gave a presentation entitled 'Exploring the Principle of Theandricity in Byzantine Christology' at the Research Seminars of the Department of Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney, within which he is also a PhD Candidate.

Fundraiser

On Sunday 13 April, the Philoptochos of the Greek Orthodox Parish of the Resurrection of Christ, Kogarah, hosted a Palm Sunday Luncheon in order to create awareness of and to support St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College.

Visit by His Grace Bishop Ignatije

The College was honoured to welcome His Grace Bishop Ignatije, Bishop of Pozarevac-Branichevo in Serbia and Professor of Dogmatics within the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade. His Grace has worked as an archpastor and scholar for over two decades and a number of his published writings have focussed on eschatology and Christian ontology. He was accompanied by His Grace Bishop Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Ordination

College graduate, Deacon Prohoros Anastasiadis (BTh, 2014), was ordained to the holy priesthood by His Grace Bishop Seraphim of Apollonias on Sunday 30 March at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, Liverpool (NSW). He now serves this church as its assistant parish priest.
