With the blessing of our College Dean, His Eminence Archbishop STYLIANOS of Australia, the Eighth Patristic Symposium took place at St Andrew’s from 24-25 August. The theme of this year’s Symposium was ‘Saint Irenaeus of Lyons: History, Theology & Significance of the Apologists’, and was organised by Professor James Harrison (Director of Research, Sydney College of Divinity) and Dr Philip Kariatlis (Academic Director and Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology, St Andrew’s). It was attended by seventy delegates.
Grace Bishop Siluan (Mrakic) of the Serbian Orthodox Church, a College alumnus, opened the Symposium with prayer. Another College alumnus, the Very Revd Sophronios Konidaris, College Chaplain, read out the official greeting of His Eminence to all the delegates, briefly introducing the keynote speaker and thanking also the additional fifteen presenters.
The keynote speaker was the Very Revd Dr John Behr, The Father Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York. He also holds the Metropolitan Kallistos Chair of Orthodox Theology at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. The title of his keynote address was “St Irenaeus of Lyons and the School of John.”
The names of the remaining presenters were: Revd Girgis al-Antony (St Athanasius College), Chris Baghos (PhD Candidate), Dr Mario Baghos (Charles Sturt University), Sr Dr Margaret Beirne (St Andrew’s), Fr Damaskinos of Xenophon Monastery (University of Eastern Finland), Dr Bernard Doherty and Shelley Thompson (Charles Sturt University), Dr Lydia Gore-Jones (St Andrew’s), Sr Dr Virginia Hutchinson (Antiochian Orthodox Church), Dr Boo Teong Khoo (Sydney College of Divinity), Dr Andrew Mellas (St Andrew’s), Dr Joe Mock (Australian College of Theology), Dr Vicki Petrakis (Macquarie University), Jonatan Simons (PhD candidate), and Revd Joseph Vnuk (Catholic Theological Institute).
