Curriculum Objectives

This Module aims at giving the student the skills for chanting specific hymns that act as a prototype (automelon) for a number of hymns (prosomoia) that have the same rhythmical melody.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the automelon melody for hymns found in various parts of liturgical services.
  2. Apply the melody of an automelon to a prosomoion..
  3. Chant automela and prosomoia with and without Byzantine music notation.

Assessment Profile

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between automela and prosomoia, and where they are found in various parts of liturgical services, eg. quizzes.   
  2. Perform melodies of automela and apply them to prosomoia, e.g. in class participation, and practical exam.
